National Careers Week 2026 returns with the theme ‘Own Your Future’, showcasing how free careers guidance and educational resources across the UK are helping people take ownership of their career path.

For 23‑year‑old Lowri Bullen from Llanelli, career guidance played a key role in helping her choose the right path after finishing her Level 3 catering course.

“I wasn’t sure whether to go into full‑time work or do another course in college,” she explained.

She heard about Careers Wales through lecturers at her college, who put her in touch with Lara Bagagiolo, a careers adviser based on campus.

Lara helped Lowri explore two main routes: returning to college to study Level 2 Travel and Tourism or going into full‑time employment.

“In the first meeting we looked at what my options were. Lara suggested I do a list of pros and cons to help me decide what would be the best choice for me,” said Lowri.

She completed the list at home and during their next meeting, they talked through each point in detail. Lara also used visualisation techniques to help Lowri tune into what felt right.

Through these conversations, Lowri realised she would feel happier going back to college.

“I went to an open evening and spoke to the lecturers in Travel and Tourism to see if the course suited me. After that, I decided to apply for Level 2,” she said.

Lara also helped Lowri update her CV, including new work experience she had gained.

Lowri has now reached the end of her course and is focusing on her next steps. She feels far more confident about her future and is currently applying for apprenticeships to become a travel agent.

“The support has shown me I can set goals for myself and look for the next steps in my life,” she said.

She particularly values the ongoing support Lara provided throughout her journey.

“Lara has been lovely to work with. She’s so supportive, and if I see her around college, I can always check in with her. She’s a wonderful person to be around.”

Her message to others is clear: “Reach out to Careers Wales straight away. And while you’re waiting for your first appointment, look at the Careers Wales website to see what opportunities there are.”
