Dyfed-Powys Police is backing the return of the national campaign by Welsh Athletics. It aims to raise awareness of women’s safety when running at night or early mornings, educate people on practical ways to support women, and empower women to continue running through winter with confidence.
The campaign is also encouraging groups and clubs to ‘reclaim the streets’ on Sunday 25thOctober, the day the clocks go back, by hosting a group run.
Last year’s campaign started meaningful conversations around the barriers women face when running in the dark. This year is attempting to spark similar conversations in the ally space and encourage people to support women, have open and honest conversations with peers and inspire others to do the same.
Detective Superintendent Wayne Bevan, force lead for protecting vulnerable people, said:
“We’re pleased to support the return of this campaign. We’ll be visiting local running clubs again this year and looking to build on the success of the last campaign. Everyone deserves to be safe, and feel safe, when they’re taking care of their physical and mental wellbeing.
“If you experience harassment or intimidating behaviour when you’re out running, please report it to us so we can investigate it. You can also report areas that make you feel unsafe, due to things like poor lighting or broken part equipment, through the Street Safe website.”
