WORK to re-surface Llanelli’s Sandy Road and improve the junction leading to Maes Y Coed, have been largely completed ahead of schools starting back.
Carmarthenshire County Council has been undertaking the work during the school summer holidays to minimise disruption to traffic as much as possible.
Contractors have also been working to restricted hours in efforts to keep peak flow traffic moving as easily as possible.
Whilst the main roadworks have been completed on schedule, some work is still required on sections of footpath.
This work will be carried out next week outside of school run peak times, and will take no longer than three days with manually controlled stop and go signs to manage traffic if necessary.
Until then, the road will be open as normal.
As a main commuter route connecting Llanelli and Pwll, the road was in need of maintenance ahead of the autumn and winter season to ensure it is protected for the long term benefit of all road users.
Drivers and residents along the route have been thanked for their patience whilst the works have been underway.
Cllr Hazel Evans, executive board member for transport, said: “Our highways team has been busy arranging road repairs across hundreds of miles of Carmarthenshire’s transport network.
“Juggling traffic and roadworks is never easy, and we appreciate it causes delays for drivers. However, we always try to minimise disruption as far as is practical.
“Along this busy stretch of road, which is used by commuters travelling between Llanelli and Pwll, we have undertaken works during the summer holidays, and are pleased to report they are complete ahead of the nearby schools and college starting back for the autumn term.”
