Neil Hamilton, MS for Mid & West Wales, and Leader of UKIP Wales is urging farmers to join a special on-line meeting to discuss what they will need to do when we leave the European Union.
Mr Hamilton, a member of the Climate Change, Environment and Rural Affairs committee, is calling on them to find out more about their Brexit requirements by joining a webinar next week, hosted by the Farmers’ Union of Wales.
He said: “As a long-time supporter of farmers and the agricultural industry I am delighted the FUW has called this special meeting to explain the changes to members.
“It is vital farmers know what is required for their businesses from January 1 next year. There will be challenging times ahead but farmers are used to rising to a challenge from daily weather, to floods to droughts.
“The Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of our agricultural industry. As the demand for home produced food continues to soar, our farmers are committed to meeting the unprecedented demands which will be made.
“This Zoom meeting will have experts on hand to explain the technical and practical changes which farmers in Wales will need to know. There is a lot to absorb so I do urge everyone to sign up to find out more.”
The Farmers’ Union of Wales is hosting the special webinar on Thursday, December 17 at 7pm via Zoom.
Helping to explain these changes, and translate them into practicalities, are representatives from British Meat Processors Association, Food Standards Agency, Hybu Cig Cymru and Welsh Government. The webinar is chaired by FUW President Glyn Roberts, with closing remarks from FUW Head of Policy Nick Fenwick.
FUW Policy Officer Teleri Fielden said: “There are significant changes occurring to the trading arrangements with UK agriculture’s biggest export customer-the EU as well as new ways of working for all sections of the food supply chain in the UK.
“This means farmers need to be aware of the impacts of these changes for their businesses. Things such as the non-tariff barriers we hear so much won’t just impact ports after December – they will affect every stage of food production, so it is important for farmers to understand potential implications for their businesses. “
