Carmarthenshire County Council has sought the views of residents, businesses and road users on its proposal to undertake improvement works on the reconfiguration of the A484 Sandy Road/Maes Y Coed junction in Llanelli.
The revised proposals presented by Carmarthenshire County Council and AtkinsRéalis have been developed through close collaboration with Welsh Government and are a result of many years of iteration. The proposals have been through multiple stages of design review, based on traffic modelling, technical assessment and public consultation, with the key aim of maximising impact on congestion whilst minimising land take and impact on surrounding residents. In conjunction with completed works at Sandy Roundabout and proposed future works at Denham Avenue, the proposals present a solution to improving multi-modal traffic flow and improving safety along the A484 which Welsh Government have committed to funding through the Local Transport Fund.

Details of the proposed improvement works
The scheme is designed to enhance journey time reliability between Llanelli and Burry Port by improving the A484 Sandy Road / Maes-Y-Coed junction, through the introduction of a dedicated right-turn lane. The junction improvements focus on tackling peak-time congestion, ensuring smoother and more reliable travel for all commuters in the area. Additionally, the scheme aims to improve air quality and access for all modes of transport to and from Ysgol Y Strade, Furnace School and Coleg Sir Gar, as well as enhancing existing Active Travel facilities and improving bus journey time reliability.
Key improvements include the provision of a dedicated right-turn lane from the A484 Sandy Road onto Maes-Y-Coed Road, and enhancements to existing active travel facilities including the installation of a new controlled crossing on the Maes-Y-Coed Road, and the introduction of advanced stop lines for cyclists.

I would like to thank everyone who engaged with us on this very important project to positively impact the air quality, road safety, traffic flow and environmental attractiveness of Sandy Road.
The mix of views we have gathered at the engagement events and online consultation evidences the challenging nature of the scheme and need to arrive at the most appropriate solution possible for all stakeholders.
Several options for this scheme have been considered over the past few years, however, we feel assured that this is the most appropriate solution to implement given the funding available to us, the current transport policy landscape and the analysis undertaken to date.
To minimise disruption locally, we intend to carry out the improvement works during the school summer holiday, July to September,”
The A484 Sandy Road (Sandy Road/Maes Y Coed) improvement works are due to commence in July 2025. Local residents will receive written correspondence confirming the start date in the run-up to construction. Face to face drop in sessions will also be arranged in advance of the construction period to give those effected the opportunity to raise any further queries with representatives from Carmarthenshire County Council, AtkinsRéalis and the appointed Contractor.

How is narrowing the road going to help traffic flow?
Wendy Mathias the road is being widened. Land is being ‘taken’ from the front gardens of some of the Sandy Road houses to enable the road widening

Wendy Mathias taken was probably the wrong word. I expect the land was purchased by the council under some form of ‘compulsory purchase scheme’. I’m sure the Probert owners will have been properly compensated
I’ve been saying that and no turning right coming out of Maesycoed for years. The cost will be only two road signs. That would increase traffic at the Denham Avenue mini roundabout, but there’s was more room and visibility there than at the junction.

Rachel Rees this is the first phase. There are plans for works at the Denham avenue junction which hopefully will improve traffic flow in the easterly direction
The council refuse to listen to the people what they are going to do will have no affect on the problem , It’s a waste of money that can be better spent by repairing the roads in Carmarthenshire pot holes every where , not only will it have no affect its going to create a lot of issues for locals with traffic taking short cuts through Stradey Woods it will be chaos , every suggestion people have made the council come back with a reason why they can’t like knocking down houses that’s rubbish mini roundabouts all around the area with no demolition involved , mini roudabout has been suggested , the only thing causing the issue is the lights no lights traffic will flow a lot quicker , And if you want to back further why wasn’t this sorted while building the new houses different access or is just an after thought of a very neglectful council

This should have been sorted before they built the Sandy Water Park houses to enable – which blocks the obvious route for a bypass road. The independent consultants have considered a number of schemes – including bypass options. Read the reports
Wait and see how many accidents will occur i live in Stepney Road any road works along Sandy Road people come up our street to avoid waiting from all directions speeding through the street and they run into the traffic coming through Stradey Woods who also avoid the lights the street is gridlocked by two way traffic that’s because the street is full of parked cars 🚗 it’s going to be hell during the suggested alteration to the road , God knows how long it will go on and what’s the cost to the public , This council is as useless as they all are ,

The biggest issue is the road from Pwll to Llanelli and the road from North dock to strade. I see only one solution. Put rush hour traffic lights on the roundabout and that will cut the congestion in half. No choice but to go when green and then every direction gets a fair amount of travel time. Turn them off when rush hour is over and the jobs a good one

Make Denham Rd the other way to the estate.
Reduce the speed limit to 10mph to please Welsh Labour.
Go back to the root cause of the traffic bottlenecks …the large development of houses on former strategy park ..did the council not see the traffic when there were big crowds at the ground ? So having a highly concentrated housing development with multiple car households on a road to schools and colleges and burry port was not thought of as needed properly thought out roads ? As it is solutions should be no right turn and mini roundabouts but in all seriousness I’d have considered a road alongside cycle path many years ago …councils are not there for tax payers just self serving and remember it’s Carmarthen in the council name not Llanelli
Stephen Brown The problem stems from a lack of forward planning after the Steelworks closed. The obvious bypass is now blocked by the Sandy Water Park houses. The issue is also exacerbated by the continuing development of properties in BurryPort and Pembrey and the popularity of the Pembrey Country Park. The Stradey Park housing development obviously hasn’t helped but it is completely wrong to blame it for all the traffic issues along the westbound route out of the town. The residents of Bassett Terrace in Pwll have been complaining for years
Two-car families are becoming the norm now and, let’s not forget, families need houses to live in
David Rees I did touch on burry port but the housing development has added to an already busy road as I said for those who remember trying to leave strategy on rugby days will know this was an issue in waiting so if the traffic lights and housing development were not there would the bottleneck no longer exist the council have no real care for Llanelli as it’s Carmarthen at heart
