Llanelli Labour MP Dame Nia Griffith has successfully secured £20 million extra investment for Carmarthenshire through the UK Government’s Plan for Neighbourhoods.
The money can be spent on anything from local park improvements to fixing up empty buildings and high streets, but it is up to local residents to decide what to do. It will deliver £2 million every year for the next ten years, supporting jobs, community facilities, green spaces, and measures to make the area safer and stronger.
As part of the new Pride in Place fund, Carmarthenshire is one of only 10 areas in Wales selected to pioneer a new way of deciding how to spend public money on local projects.
Dame Nia Griffith MP said:
“I promised at the last election to continue fighting to secure investment into our local communities and I am proud to have been able to deliver. This £20 million of new funding will change lives over the next decade and be spent where local people need it most.”
The Llanelli MP added:
“Local people know their area better than anyone else and that is why the UK Labour Government has decided to do this differently. This is our chance to improve our towns and villages here by making the big decisions for ourselves.”
“Getting an extra £2million a year, for ten years, is a massive investment in Carmarthenshire. We can choose to spend it on a wide range of different things and all ideas are welcome. Decisions about how it is used will come from local people with every penny needing to be invested wisely, fairly and transparently.”
On top of this in Carmarthenshire County Council will receive an additional £1.5 million of capital funding to improve their public spaces such as fixing broken bus shelters, more bins to help stop litter and revamping run-down facilities.

Martin Lindsay Nia was one of the few Politicians that stepped up when we were pushing for a Changing Places toilet in Llanelli. She turned up to meetings, pushed the council. No publicity, no photo op. Just genuine hard graft behind the scenes.
The Changing Places toilet we now have in Llanelli Asda is used by many and so needed by disabled people.
We’ll always be grateful to her for her dedication to the cause

Michelle Davies No, not toilets. A Changing Places toilet specifically. It’s an essential resource for disabled people.
You may have seen the BBC piece that my son did where a journalist accompanied him into the ‘disabled’ toilet in the market where he couldn’t even get his powered wheelchair in there.
Changing Places toilets are built to specific design to allow space for multiple carers, big wheelchairs, and they also have a changing bed and hoist. It’s the difference between some disabled people being able to come into the town centre and use the shops, theatre, cinema etc…and them being completely excluded, further isolated and further away from essential services.
All of those involved in the campaign were very grateful for the support received. It wouldn’t have happened otherwise.

While welcome indeed and l thank her help. At 40.000 a week it really is a tiny sum when spread among Carmarthenshire. With inflation in a few years it will be even less.
I think that we all need to accept that if we want our high Streets to improve we have to personally get involved. Govts of any party are unable to solve every problem. I will spent 2 hours a week in Llanelli town removing weeds and sweeping the empty shop doorways. Not major but better than complaining. I would not live in sad home and see no reason why l should accept a sad town

Just look at the state of Llanelli with her as MP, how many years has it taken for her ignoring the demise of the town and surrounding area’s before she started to notice, maybe it’s because for first time she may have to deliver something or pay the price for her negligence. I was born in Llanelli and love the town but to see it now saddens me, where has the Labour MP been for the last decade. Time for a change and I hope the people of Llanelli take this chance and hopefully get someone who will deliver for the town.
