“Only one party can beat Reform”: Plaid Cymru’s message as Sir Gaerfyrddin goes to the polls

Plaid Cymru have declared that only they can win more votes and seats than Reform in Sir Gaerfyrddin in this week’s Senedd election (Thursday, 7 May), encouraging everyone who wants to stop Nigel Farage’s party from winning in the county to lend them their vote.

The latest Yougov, ITV and Wales Governance Center MRP poll, released yesterday (Tuesday, 5 May) predicts that Plaid Cymru will win 33% of the vote across Wales, with Reform close behind with 29%. The poll also predicts that Labour, the Greens, the Liberal Democrats and the Conservatives will trail far behind.

The result is expected to be tight between the two parties in Sir Gaerfyrddin, a seat created from the Westminster constituencies of Carmarthen and Llanelli .

Nerys Evans, one of Plaid Cymru’s candidates in the constituency, has said that her party offers a “positive vision”, which contrasts with what Reform offers.

Among Plaid Cymru’s main policies is guaranteeing 20 hours a week of childcare to every single family, whether they are in work, training, or education or not; a strategy to grow the economy and create jobs through a National Development Agency; and a new numeracy and literacy scheme to ensure that every child gets the best start in life.

Nerys Evans said:

“As the voters of Sir Gaerfyrddin head to the polls on Thursday, the choice could not be more stark.

“Only two parties can win here: Plaid Cymru, who offer new leadership, a positive vision, and which will be accountable only to the people of Wales; or Reform, which would divide our communities, threaten the future of our NHS, cut support for our culture and language and is controlled by Nigel Farage, billionaires, and ex-Tories in London.

“Support for Labour has disappeared in Carmarthenshire, with people unwilling to vote for a party that has left Wales down for over 27 years and in Westminster since Keir Starmer became Prime Minister. In addition, there is no evidence that the Greens or the Liberal Democrats will secure enough votes to come close to winning a seat.

“We ask anyone who wants to prevent a victory for Reform in Carmarthenshire to lend their vote to Plaid Cymru on Thursday.”

  1. No decent person can ever vote labour again after labour friends of Israel supporting a genocide baby killers. We have been betrayed by labour

    • John Trowbridge – so on that basis there is only one way to stop Reform and that is to vote for Plaid Cymru. The voting system is such that it will take about 12% of the vote to gain that sixth seat. As no party other than Plaid and Reform are predicted to hit that level here then the only way to minimise Reform’s representation in the Senedd is to vote Plaid.

  2. It’s misleading and untrue to say “only one party can beat Reform” – it’s a 6 seat PR system.

    • Stephen Kelshaw Any party that wins less than 12% in a constituency is highly unlikely to win a seat. On that basis, the vast majority of polls show that yes, only one party can beat Reform in Sir Gâr.

      • Alex Evans No. It does dhow you winning 3 seats – but that still makes your 2 horse race claim untrue and misleading – in fact you are more likely to be helping Reform get an extra seat because you are not going to get a 4th seat

  3. Based on the final YouGov poll, Reform are on three Senedd seats in Carmarthenshire and Plaid are also on three.
For Plaid, the difference between getting three seats or four could come down to just 2% of the vote.
If you live in Carmarthenshire and you don’t want three seats to go to Reform, please get out and vote tomorrow – and vote for Plaid Cymru.
Your heart may truly be with the Greens or Labour but in this election we have to vote Plaid to keep the number of Reform seats down. Other parties are not likely to poll enough to get that tricky sixth seat.

Why is this necessary after we were told PR meant an end to tactical voting? Because the D’Hondt system is not much better than FPTP. Will Hayward has called it an abomination.

Pembrokeshire has been deliberately bundled in with the Welsh speaking towns to water down its right wing voting
Vote rigging by the pathetic left

    • Lynn Jones Lakshmi Dasi So democracy doesnt matter to you then , its turned into ‘vote this way to stop another party getting in’ !Disgusting and what is seriously wrong with people to want Liebour part 2 to wreck the country for another 20 years, Plaid are not fighting for Welsh people !

    • Lynn Jones Lakshmi Dasi why would anyone in their right mind vote for more years of mismanagement with Plaid/Labour, have you not had enough of them?

    • Lynn Jones Lakshmi Dasi Thanks for letting me know. I wasn’t going to vote today, but if it only needs a 2% swing, I’ll definitely make time to go and vote – for Reform.

  4. Why would anyone not want Reform, just read Plaids manifesto it is disgustingly bad for Wales, look before you ask them to govern

    • David Lewis God help Wales if Reform gets in .They are such Liars you shouldn’t trust them .They are not just against Immigrants they are against anyone that is different to them .😡

  8. Tactical voting is the way forward to keep out the liars, tax dodgers Trump loving, fascists and racists at Reform.
    Stop English Nationalism in Wales.

  9. Plaid will NOT reverse the 20mph lunacy
Plaid wants independence but wants to rejoin the EU
Plaid wants to half the number of cars by 2030
Plaid says there is no such thing as illegal immigration
Plaid will allow trans to go into your daughters toilets
    Plaid hate the English
    Plaid are racist

  10. Will plaid abolish the 20 mph it’s a nightmare we are the laughing stock of the uk it’s like driving miss Daisy driving in wales

  11. Oh look all the countries misfits standing all together, without a brain cell between them 🤣🤣🤣

  12. Why is politics beating or stopping X instead of actual policy for people.

Plaid are pure garbage and to some degree so is Reform. But switching out the Labour garbage for the same garbage is pointless.

This new voting system has to be binned too. 1 person. 1 vote. 1 party representative.

  13. Anything is better than the racist scum reform but it dose help Plaid is a party that actually stand up for Wales rather than lining Farage’s pockets and saying whatever Putin wants

  14. So we know which party the MSM are backing. And they are all the same – shoving propaganda down our throats

  15. Reform will walk it in English councils tomorrow…….do you think they know something we don’t in Wales?
Do you think they are living the nightmare that will come to Wales also?
Do you really think Ron has YOUR best interests at heart….open borders, war on motorists, socialism that has to be paid for by someone.

  16. Voting Plaid Cymru is pressing the self destruct button 🔴
    and voting for …
    ▪️Self Gender ID
    ▪️Nation of Sanctuary
    ▪️Open Borders
    ▪️Increased Immigration
    ▪️20 Minute Neighbourhoods
    ▪️More Blanket Speed Limits
    ▪️More war against motorists
▪️Inflated Tax to pay for Welfare Freebie’s
▪️Loss of business out of Wales
    ▪️Reduced investment
    ▪️Dictatorial / Imposed Welsh Language
    ▪️Back door Independence

BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU VOTE FOR ⚠️

  17. Division….divide us from the UK, division against English people, especially those who have chosen to make Wales their home, division against non Welsh speaking people…..where is the Division really?

  18. Rhun ap Iorwerth, the leader of Plaid Cymru, is a member of the Welsh Fabian Society. While the Fabian Society is a socialist think tank historically and primarily affiliated with the UK Labour Party, it is not exclusive to Labour members. In Wales, members of the Senedd (MSs) from other progressive backgrounds, including Plaid Cymru, can be affiliated with the group.

  19. Borrowed from another site.

Funny how for years Plaid Cymru have had their hands on the wheel in Anglesey and Gwynedd… yet look around ….what exactly have they delivered?

Declining town centres. A housing mess. Young locals priced out or forced to leave. And still the same rhetoric, the same excuses, the same blame game.

They bang on about protecting communities, but seem dead set on blocking anything that actually brings money in. Anti-tourism, anti-investment, anti-growth … then act surprised when the local economy struggles. Tourism isn’t some inconvenience… it’s a lifeline. Cut that off and you cut the legs out from under local people trying to earn a living.

And here’s the contradiction “nation of sanctuary”… unless you’re the wrong type of person? Because let’s be honest, there’s been a steady drip of anti-English sentiment dressed up as protecting Welsh identity. You don’t strengthen a place by shutting people out, especially the very people who live here, work here, and spend money here.

It’s become blinkered. Ideology over reality. Blocking development(unless it’s town council building in a public park!), resisting change, and calling it “protection” when all it’s really doing is holding the area back.

Meanwhile, real issues go nowhere. Housing? Still a crisis. Jobs? Limited. Opportunities? Shrinking.

Anglesey and Gwynedd don’t need more of the same. They need fresh thinking, real investment, and a bit of common sense.

Because if this is “the plan”… it’s not working.

Time for a change.. make your vote count.

  20. My reply to a lady who cannot understand why anyone in Wales would vote for what she calls an ” English nationalist party “…..
You do realise that only people who live in Wales can vote right? Do you think the majority of those people aren’t Welsh? Do you realise Wales gets 15% more per person in public spending than England? How is that extra money being spent to result in the worst NHS outcomes and the worst education outcomes in the UK? These ARE the devolved government’s responsibilities so Labour propped up by Plaid are responsible. So I can only conclude they are less interested in Wales prospering and more interested in power and money to line their own pockets. Like taking candy from a baby if you play the Welsh Nationalist card.

  21. I was part of the audience at the Sennedd Election BBC programme aired 28th April…..I will tell you my observations…..
    1. The left seem to understand by ANY mention of immigration, this includes legal immigrants.
    2. The left leaders play on the moral virtue signalling by suggesting ANY concerns about illegal immigration means you are not compassionate nor is Wales tolerant.
    3. Independence supported by both Plaid and Greens was not popular with many in the audience.
    4. Lack of willingness to co-operate with Reform from the left was apparent. This would mean that despite Reform possibly getting a 3rd of the vote or more, the left coalition would stifle the will of a 3rd of voters.

God help us if Labour/Plaid and Greens get together.

  22. People saying they are Welsh and proud and voting for an English national party, probably non Welsh speakers who can’t speak their native language and call themselves Welsh but can’t speak their language 😂

  23. Bye bye travel, hospitality, movement, farming, savings, property, land, safety for all, businesses, cars, bikes, vans, decent food…………

  24. Plaid Cymru Pen-bre a Phorth Tywyn / Pembrey and Burry Port
& I can prove all if it.
    Put the complaint in.

  25. Send the message that the establishment has failed our country and we cannot tolerate more decline and degradation. Vote REFORM

  26. Don’t do it again they are labour with a different name what have you got to lose give REFORM a chance where ever there is a REFORM candidate in England Wales Scotland vote for them give them ago

  27. Plaid’s globalist agenda will give more to illegal migrants than to us, including priority healthcare and housing assistance.

  28. Vote reform for Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

  29. When you attack someone / party in person it shows that you do not have a single political argument left .

  30. Llanelli – the arse of Wales, with bugger all there; a town raped & pillaged of all that gave it identity & NOW the gormless idiots who have commented on here somehow believe that the English Nationalist Party in a pale blue rosette give a shit about Llanelli?

How mad do you have to be to believe that?

How many of you remember the 1980s?
    – if you don’t then your vote will take us back there!

  31. Only Labour can save Wales from the dangers of electing Plaid or Reform and that’s Labour’s two governments working together for the people of Wales since 2024 with massive new investment already underway, backed up with an extra £1.2 billion providing jobs and security that is real and tangible, unlike the pie in the sky promises of the other two which do not add up or are feasible. There’s 2.5 hrs left to save Carmarthenshire and Wales, so if you haven’t voted yet please go and vote for Labour before it’s too late ,
